2010 and this blog is still here!

Well I suppose that means I should start blogging again. Honestly I forgot all about this one. I was pretty shocked to see it still active. My friend Gorbs still had this one linked on his blog page and I clicked on the link wondering what i'd find. When i did I found this page. It took me a second to recall but I do remember starting this blog just for kicks. So since google has been nice enough to keep hosting it I'm going to start posting to it again.

So since my last post what's happened in my life:

My son John is now 4 years old
I have a daughter named Rylee who is 1 and 1/2
I still live in Plainfield with my wife and 2 kids
I'm now MCPD-EA certified
I still work for Avanade
I still do some part time DJ'ing and karaoke work
My cell phone is an iPhone 3g
I own a Wii and a PS3 even though i rarely get enough time to play them (sigh!)
I'm still a geek! I love almost all things geek!

So that's a brief update on my life. I think in the future I'd like to keep this blog to posting about the things I find interesting in the technology industry. Comptuers, phones, gadgets, etc....so if you care to hear my opinion on such things I welcome you back. Until next time.....Take Care!

I am now an MCP! I rule!!

Can you tell i'm happy! I just passed my first of 6 Microsoft certification exams, the dreaded 70-528. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Web-Based Client Development. All I can say is i'm so pscyhed right now about it I can't even begin to tell you! Here's why! Way back when I was fresh out of college I took the VB6.0 test twice and failed it by 1 wrong answer...BOTH TIMES! A few years later i was asked by a company i worked for to take a SQL Server class and cert test in a week. I failed that test by 2 wrong answers! So when i got to the testing center today let me just say that confidence was not at an all time high! So that passing score of 771 was a sight for sore eyes. It was all i could do to keep from yelling out YESSSSS in the middle of the testing room!! Hahahah...i did raise my arms in the air for victory but kept it quiet! I'm a dork what can I say! So from this point forward when you address me please address me as: John McNamara MCP . Thank you! heh heh heh!

Work and other such items

Work is going pretty well. At little slow at times and somewhat boring when it is slow but overall it's going well. I was on two projects but now i'm down to just one. The work isn't as challenging as I'd like but it's work...and work = pay checks and pay checks = money! Money is good. Money means I can pay my bills, support my family, and eat! Eating is good too!! LOL

I'm currrently studying for my first Microsoft Certification test (70-528). So far i'm hitting somewhere in the 60% correct range on the practice tests. This won't get me passed so i need to keep studying...but it's going pretty well. I'm starting to know more than i don't know so that's good.

Other than that...it's same old same old.

Happy 1st Birthday Little John!!

Last week was my sons first birthday. Last saturday we had his party at the clubhouse near my home. It was a lot of fun. Good friends, family, presents, and SMASH CAKE! Little John seemed to have as much fun as a 1 yr old can have at a party before conking out for the night. Most everyone showed up who said they were going to so I'd say the party was a "smashing" success (haha pun intended). John got wayyyy too many presents and as a result my living room and family room now look like a toy store. But that's okay as long as he's having fun so am I.

No More City Fun!!

This is my last week that i get to work in the city for the project I'm on at work. It's not a big deal but it was fun working in the loop for a while. Now I go back to the farm country 5 days per week instead of two. Not really a big deal as I'm only missing 1 night at home techinically. Plus it saves me from buying a train ticket and spending extra money on gas during the week. So it's all good.

I hear that the new Clerks II movie rocks! It's been getting 3 stars all over the place! I'll be one of the first in line to see that next Tuesday. Tuesday's the movie theater in Bloomington allows you to bring a bowl (any size) and they'll fill it with popcorn for 50 cents w/free refills!!! How can you beat that?? It's so country!! LOL

Long time no post!! Sorry.....

Sorry it's taken me so long to update the blog. I've been very busy with work. I'm still working in Bloomington, IL most of the time. Part of each week i'm also working downtown. It's not too bad as I get to come home a couple days early so I can see my wife and son more and that's a plus. The downside is I sometimes feel like all I do is travel between offices.

So how was everyone's 4th of July? I had a fun time at home with Tracy and Little John. And the great thing is we didn't have to go anywhere. The fireworks displays being put on by all the neighbors and the people in my subdivision were better than any fireworks show. Plus it was free of crowds! We just pulled some chairs out of the garage and enjoyed!! Little John slept through his first 4th but that's okay. He didnt miss much!!

I just saw Superman Returns. It was good. I liked that fact that they found a nobody who looked ALOT like a very young, healthy Christopher Reeve. He even talked like him and had the same mannerisms. It was a little freaky. I also thought Kevin Spacey was a great Lex Luthor. I especially liked the jokes his girlfriend made during the movie. A great quote from the movies went something like this......

Lex: What was that thing my father used to say?
Lex's GF: You're and idiot!!
Lex: No .....what was it...c'mon???
Lex's GF: GET OUT???

LOL too damn funny. More than a few times I busted up laughing at this chick.

Finally Working!!

Took a while but i'm finally doing the job i was actually hired to do. Well...sort of. I'm not in a development role but more of a team leader for a development team. Oh well it's still in the field and it pays the bills. The plus is i'm learning alot and i'm sure it will help my resume in the long run. I can't really say too much more because it's "not allowed" but I will say this. It's going to be alot of work and definately a challenge!

On another note....

Anyone going to see Da Vinci code this week? I'm thinking about going to check it out next week after the crowds die down a bit. I haven't heard any reviews yet but I'm definately looking forward to it!!

Google has a new service that allows people without any technical skills whatsoever to create pretty nice webpages. It's free and it comes with 100MB of space. Sigh...the life of me!

So i turned 37 on the 17th of this month. Yep 37 that's 3 years away from the big 4-0. That's almost 4 decades! I can't be almost 40...it's impossible. I was just 21 a few years ago. I still remember high school!! I can still remember college and all the fun i had. I remember buying my first car. The first time i got laid...i mean...who doesn't?? But still....

Sirius Satellite Radio Rocks!!

I've now had it for about a week and it's great. Howard Stern any time you want to listen to him. Raw Dogg comedy channel is hillarious. I heard in one hour at least 20 different comics. I heard Eddie Murphy, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Larry the cable guy, Jerry Seinfeld, just to mention a few. Plus you can get your music or news fix any time you want it too. I just can't say enough about it. This radio rocks!!

More Amazing Animal Stories....

So on my way down to the farm yesterday I was drivning down I-55 and low and behold what do i see on the side of the road??

A crow you say? Nope!! Try again!!
A canadian good perhaps? bahhh nope keep guessing!!
A deer possibly? Oh you'd like to think that wouldn't you.

Nope what i saw on the side of the road was THIS!!!

a big fat wild turkey!! Don't ask me what this thing was doing there but there he was big as day. I'd say at least 20lbs easy. I thought about stopping to take pic with my phone but i figured it wasn't worth the hassle. So here is a picture of one i found online just so you know what i saw. I'm not sure why it was on the side of the road but i'll bet that would be some tasty roadkill if someone hit him!! Personally i hope he made it out of there because it just wouldn't seem right if he got mushed by a minivan. He was just hangin out checking out the traffic, minding his own business. Not even moving really. Just standing there looking like a turkey.

Just another fun filled day down on the farm!!!

Studying my brains off for the MCSD certification testing and hanging out at the apartment. Today i'd say was pretty productive. I got about 3-4 chapters in. I also installed SQL Server and wrote some code in vb.net for practice. Fun fun fun!!!

4.2 lbs...he's back on track!!

Yep this week i hit the weight watchers scale a full 4.2lbs lighter than i was the week before. This gives me a total of 27.6lbs since starting the first week in January. I'm 7.3 lbs away from my 10% goal of 34.9 lbs. Once i hit that i'm going to have to set a goal weight and start working on that. I'm thinking around 180lbs is going to be goal but not sure. It's based on the recommended weight range the heart association puts out not on what I want. I could get a doctors note to set the ideal goal weight but i'm thinking i'll try to go for the real goal and see how it goes.

Another week down on the farm.....

So this week was fun. I downloaded the rest of the applications i need for my job. This took me at least one day and a few hours the next becasue of the sheer size of the applications.

I took in a couple meetings this week. One was an "On the bench" training about the Websphere application development tool (aka WSAD). It was very interesting and let me get out of my apartment for a while and meet real human beings!!!! Then the second meeting was a MCSD study group. Since Avanade requires certification the study group is going to be a huge help.

Some other things that happened while here:

MY CELL PHONE GOT ACTIVATED FINALLY!! Okay it was only a couple days but it seemed like forever. Yay no more US Cellular!!
I got to have coffee in house all week thanks to my free Gevalia coffee maker. Don't get me wrong i like Dunkin Donuts coffee but i always end up spending 3 bucks there because those muffins or donuts just call out my name.
I got my transcendar tests ordered...1 came in so far the other 3 i'm still waiting on
Got to play a little xbox thanks to my controller being here and NOT AT HOME!!!
Had several webcam conversations with my 6 1/2 month old son due to the magic of webcams...here's a quote from him, "DADADADADADADAAAA!!!" I'm thinking he's got the makings of a public speaker or television newsman. But i might be a bit biased!! hehe

Well thats about it for this week. RIVOTING WASN'T IT??? yep yep yep i live the wild and crazy life these days. Until next week....

Mmmmm Coffee!!!

So i did manage to find the Dunkin Donuts and get some coffee this morning. My PC woke me up at 4:30am when an error message popped-up this morning. Seems my download had stopped and i had to restart it. Well after that i figured might as well stay up and get some coffee!! Ahhhhh!!! I can't wait until I get my coffee maker down here. This going out for coffee is a pain not to mention expensive. Plus if i'm here making coffee there is no temptation to eat mass quantities of donuts or muffins.

Welcome to Avanade! It's official I'm now an Avanade employee!!

I finished orientation last week on Friday and I'm now writing this from my ever so spacious apartment in beautiful downtown Bloomington. Okay actually i'm a little outside of the downtown area but it's pretty close (5 to 10 mins).

Anyways I just thought I'd post a few pics and you can check out the life I live here in Bloomington!!

Here's a pic of the the entertainment center (complete with 20" TV, DVD player, and Xbox...note: I forgot my only controller for the xbox so right now it's collecting dust. )

And here's a look at the gourmet kitchen in my place here in Bloomington! Just look at that fantastic setup! I mean you could just smell the great meals coming out of that place now couldn't ya???? Makes your mouth just water doesn't it??

This is 1/2 of my excellent master bedroom suite, complete with Full size bed and Rubbermaid tub night stand!! Yeah now that's livin' I tell ya!! Look at how restfull it looks!!

But seriously everyone i'm just kidding around about the apartment. It's actually a very nice apartment for the money and it will suit my needs just fine while i'm down here to work. It has everything I need and it's nice enough where i don't have to worry about it falling apart on me. But I still say the coolest and most incredible thing I've seen so far in my travels to Bloomington is......BUFFALO!!!

Bloomington...So far so good.....

Yesterday the wife and I drove down to Bloomington to get the apartment set up. It was very weird renting an apartment when I have a house already. But being that the commute there would be 200 miles round trip each day I had to do it. It's not that bad, the rent is low, and they pay for the first six months electricity and water. Plus it's like 10 minutes from the office down there. Once i get things totally set up i'll take some pictures and you can see.....

23.4 pounds for the first month of Weight Watchers!!

Seems my superbowl pig out party didn't completely upset my weight loss apple cart after all. I lost 2.2 pounds last week to put me up to 23.4 pounds for the month. So far i'm still on track to break the 300 pound mark by the end of March. My goal is to break that barrier and then start attempting to do some jogging. I'll start out walking for the most part and then jogging for like 10 seconds and then walk some more and then jog, etc, and so on and so forth!!! Eventually i'll get it up to 50/50 jogging/walking and then hopefully all jogging. I did this same kind of think back in high school when i lost 50lbs so i'm hoping i can still try it now. I say hope because...uhhh....i'm not in high school anymore!! LOL

I'm a Superbowl Sloth!!

Last night the Tracy and I had our own private superbowl sunday party. We made chicken wings, cheese ball things, onion peels, and some chili cheese dip with chips!! I threw in some carrots and celery to give the appearance of something healthy. Well after all was said and done I went over my 33 points today by 32 points!!! Holy crap 55 points today!! Ugh....what a fatty! I'm going to have to crack the whip and cut down this week to make up for it. But it's always fun to pig out every once in a while. Death is too good for them!!!

I read this article and thought....WTF is wrong with people in this world???? Death would be too good for whoever did this!! I'd like to take my car and drive over this person's face about 50 times! All I have to say is there are a lot of sick, truly disturbed people in the world but whoever did this tops the list!! Ugh!!

21 pounds gone!!

Today I weighed in at my weekly "WW" meeting and lost 6.4lbs this week for a total of 21.8lbs for the month. I sure hope I can keep this pace up for next month. I'd like to get below 300lbs by the end of March if possible. So far it hasn't been too hard for me. I just track what i eat, try to stay within my points by eating better foods, watching my portion size, working out, and cutting way back on the fatty fried fast foods. Well so far so good!

Update: It's official I got the offer today and I accepted. They are overnighting the offer package tonight! I'll have it tomorrow morning. My first day is February 22nd!! This should be an excellent career move! It's the first time i've been excited about a job and it has nothing to do with the money!! This all about the job and the opportunity!

Got me a new Job!!

Today I had an interview with Avanade, Inc. The interview went really well and the recruiter called me to tell me that they are going to make me an offer. Sweet!! I am very excited about this job. Great opportunity to work with some great technologists and great benefits! Hopefully i'll get the official offer sheet this week and start sometime in the next two weeks! Can't wait!!

So for the last couple of weeks I've been on the "Weight Watchers Flex Points" plan. It's this plan that gives you so many points each day based on your current weight. The heavier you are the higher the points. Each food item has a point value based on (fat, fiber, and calories). When you eat say a bowl of cereal like "cheerios w/skim milk" it's 4 points. Take the 4 points off of the main point total and that's the balance you have for the day. You keep going like that until your points are gone. When the points are gone your done for the day. Well bottom line is....

15lbs gone so far!! Down to 335 from 350!! Nice!
